Virtual reality comes to you from Camp Nou

Nou Cam Nou

F.C. Barcelona, Telefónica and mobile industry body the GSMA have announced that Camp Nou will become Europe's first football stadium to have dedicated 5G coverage as standard.

The deployment, which will cover both the main stands and the playing field, will be applied to create more immersive experiences for fans watching at the Camp Nou.

Wireless 360-degree cameras around the Camp Nou will allow viewers watching at home to use VR glasses to watch and listen to the match from the directors’ box, from behind a goal, by the benches, or from any viewpoint at any given time.

Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu said: “At FC Barcelona it makes us very proud that the Camp Nou is the first football stadium in Europe with internal 5G coverage. The Camp Nou is the largest stadium in Europe. It holds more than 90,000 spectators and when Espai Barça is finished the capacity will rise to 105,000.

“Thanks to this agreement between FC Barcelona and GSMA, in partnership with Telefónica, we have made the Camp Nou a laboratory for innovation in the most advanced technology in mobile telephony, 5G.”

Redstone's Head of Strategy Mark Alexander said " Washington State's Jay Jayaram came over and showed me his 3D-4U tech a couple of years back. That became Voke. It was blisteringly good even then. 5G will make that immersive reality come alive in the stadium and being able to watch at VR at home, choosing your point of view and pinching & zooming into live sports content is exactly what sports broadcaster need to extended its dominant position at home"

Redstone is an investor in sports stadia and a sports stadia specialist.
